FIELD GUIDE - MONDAY OUTFIT

What To Wear To The Office On A Monday

People say appearances don't matter. Those people don't get promoted. Everything your wardrobe requires for a Monday in the office.

What To Wear To The Office On A Monday

What you wear to the office on a Monday matters more than what you wear any other day of the week. Monday sets the tone. By 9am, your colleagues have decided what they think of you for the week. By 9:01, you can change their mind. By 9:02, you cannot.

People say appearances don't matter, but those people don't get promoted.

This is Part 1 of a five-part guide on how to excel your corporate wardrobe and build your City collection. Nepotism won't cut it these days. And First impressions have never mattered more.

The short answer: a Merino Wool Quarter Zip in Black, a Slim Fit Oxford Shirt in blue-and-white stripe, mid-grey wool trousers, and dark Oxford lace-ups. The long answer is the rest of this guide. Read on.

What To Wear On Monday: The Merino Wool Quarter Zip

If you catch a city boy strolling aimlessly in circles at 8am in a Merino Wool Quarter Zip as soft as an estate agent's handshake, worn over a Slim Fit Oxford Shirt as polished as a letting agent's pitch to flog you a 2-bed basement flat with a toilet in the kitchen, and he has a £6 oat flat white in hand: don't worry. He's just getting ready to lock in.

On his phone are seventeen unread messages from a group chat called "LADS IN LISBON 2024." The stag was in 2024. The group has not stopped. The most recent message is a two-minute voice note from the groom, who is, according to internal sources, now getting divorced.

He has come from Clapham. He has come from Fulham. He has come from London Bridge by Northern Line. None of those journeys took less than forty five minutes, and all of them had the Quarter Zip on. By 8am, the Quarter Zip has already done a third of its day's work.

On top of the shirt sits the Merino Wool Quarter Zip. Not the suit jacket. Not the overcoat (though that comes back at 6pm if it is raining). It handles the four temperatures of a Monday in the City: the 7°C walk in, the 21°C office, the 14°C standing meeting in a boardroom that has not been heated since the Q4 budget cut, and the 6°C walk to the pub at six. None of the four require taking it off.

Black is the Monday colour. Navy is versatile. Cream reads as country weekend. But Black is the colour of a man who has decided what he is doing today and intends to do it. The Merino is RWS-certified which matters less than the fact that it does not split at the elbow after a week of wear.

The lift up at 8am is the silent court with a bloke in dressed in chinos and a hangover he's attributing to jet lag from Sunday's red-eye, a lawyer who's been up since 5am and already on his third coffee, and a PR girl in trainers-with-a-suit (an outfit that has, since 2024, become the only acceptable suit for one specific demographic), all of them looking up at the floor counter and none of them saying good morning, because saying good morning is for Tuesdays.

The Slim Fit Oxford Shirt Underneath

Underneath the Quarter Zip is the Slim Fit Oxford Shirt. Blue-and-white stripe is the Monday colour. Solid white reads as Tuesday. Pink is for a Thursday.

Button-down collar. Half a notch more relaxed than the boardroom poplin spread, but still office. A camp collar reads as holiday. A grandad collar reads as a bloke who has watched too much Peaky Blinders. A button-down stripe is the answer for Monday.

Slim, but not skinny. The Quarter Zip needs room to fall over the shoulders without bunching at the chest. A shirt that bunches is a shirt the man bought before he started his current job and has, since, become four kilograms more man than the shirt. Whether it's muscle or just fat is up for debate. He has not bought another shirt. But he has bought a new road bike.

The Monday Foundation: Trousers, Shoes, And The Belt

Below the Quarter Zip and the Oxford Shirt: a pair of mid-grey wool trousers and a pair of dark Oxford lace-ups. Not chinos. Not loafers (loafers come back on Friday). Not brown shoes. No brown in town.

Polished on Sunday night. Front, sides, heels. Heels are the tell. The man who polishes only the fronts is the man who is a fraud. The man who polishes the heels is the man whose father taught him how. The man who has not polished his shoes at all is wearing trainers and is one bad decision away from being put on a PIP.

Wool trousers sit just below the navel. They break once at the ankle. Half an inch is the break. Not a full inch (that' so new money). Not a quarter inch (screams I'm on the grad scheme). Half an inch is the Monday break.

Socks: navy or black, mid-calf, plain. Stripes are wrong. Polka dots are wrong. A witty reindeer at Christmas is the kind of thing a colleague mentions to another colleague, and the comment is back at the man wearing them by Wednesday. White socks under wool trousers belong on a tennis court or a child. Either way, not in a Monday meeting.

Belt: dark brown leather. Not black, despite the shoes being black. The City rule is that the belt matches the watch strap, not the shoes. Most men do not know this. Most men do not need to.

For a colder Monday, the upgrade is a gilet over the Quarter Zip. Portfolio for the man who has arrived. Suede for the man who does not have to try. Hybrid for the man who is good at everything.

Tuesday Is A Different Game

Monday's Quarter Zip may look like a promotion but feel like a day off. Tuesday is a different game.

The marketing girlies will swarm into the City wearing flared leggings for their one mandatory day in the office. They'll pretend to enjoy their Blank Street matcha before making decisions based purely on vibes and not data. Calendars blocked out at 4pm for a Pilates session. Attention spans destroyed by TikTok, so you'll have seconds to impress them.

Stay tuned for Part II. In the meantime: mind the gap, mind your business, and wear SIGNET.
